Copper gutters

Copper Half-Round Gutters for New Jersey Homes

Copper half round gutters give an older house the rounded profile and warm metal it was built to wear, and they can outlast aluminum by decades. We install copper half-round gutters with matching copper downspouts, and we check your roof first, because copper and some metal roofs must never meet.

The profile

How is a half-round gutter different from K-style?

A half-round gutter is a semicircle in cross-section, the traditional shape on many older houses. A K-style gutter has a flat back and a front shaped like crown molding. K-style carries more water for its size; half-round carries less and is chosen mostly for looks and period accuracy.

That capacity point comes from the University of Illinois guide to gutters and downspouts. It calls the K-style (ogee) shape the most common because of its looks and carrying capacity, and notes that half-round gutters have smaller capacity.

Because half-round carries less, sizing matters more. A large roof plane may need a larger half-round gutter or an extra downspout to move the water a K-style gutter would. We measure each roof plane before we size anything.

Life span

How long do copper gutters last?

InterNACHI’s life expectancy chart lists copper gutters at 50 years or more and copper downspouts at 100 years. It lists aluminum gutters at 20 to 40-plus years and galvanized steel gutters at 20. The chart says its figures assume regular maintenance and are guidelines, not guarantees.

Other cost guides land in the same place. HomeGuide gives copper gutters a 50-to-100-year lifespan, and Angi says they can last over 50 years with proper maintenance. Treat all of these as estimates.

Long life still depends on support. The Illinois guide recommends hangers no more than 32 inches apart for copper and aluminum gutters, closing to 16 to 24 inches where snow and ice stay much of the winter. It also recommends checking gutters at least twice a year, in spring and fall.

Patina

Will copper gutters turn green?

Over time, bare copper changes color as it weathers. It starts bright, darkens toward brown, and over many years can develop the blue-green patina seen on old buildings. How fast that happens depends on weather and exposure, so two sides of one house can age differently.

The patina is a surface layer that forms as the metal weathers. It is part of the look most copper buyers want, and it is not paint, so there is no finish to peel or repaint.

If you need the gutters to match an existing copper feature, tell us at the estimate. New copper will start brighter than old copper beside it.

Older and historic homes

Are copper gutters right for an older or historic house?

Often, yes. Half-round copper fits the colonials, Victorians and early twentieth-century houses found across older New Jersey towns. About 17 percent of New Jersey’s housing units were built in 1939 or earlier, and about 61 percent before 1980, according to the Census Bureau’s 2024 American Community Survey.

Historic districts can add a review step. Under New Jersey’s Municipal Land Use Law, a town may set up a historic preservation commission and map out historic districts. Most local ordinances send major exterior alterations in those districts through review for a permit or certificate of appropriateness, as the New Jersey Historic Trust describes.

Princeton is one example. It has designated 21 historic preservation overlay zoning districts, and its Historic Preservation Commission reviews applications in them. The commission adopted new Historic Design Guidelines in September 2026.

State permit exemptions for ordinary maintenance do not override local historic approvals. If your house is in a district, ask your town before you change the gutter material or profile. We can supply the product details for the application.

Roof compatibility

Can copper gutters go on a metal roof?

Not on every metal roof. Copper must not touch, or drain onto, a Galvalume or stone-coated steel roof, because the makers of those roofs exclude or forbid it. This is the most important check we do before quoting copper.

Metal Sales’ AZ55 Galvalume warranty excludes areas that get water runoff from lead or copper flashings or piping. It also excludes areas in metallic contact with lead, copper or graphite.

DECRA’s guide specification for its Shingle XD stone-coated steel panels says not to use materials containing lead or copper, or copper-treated lumber, with the panel system.

In practice, that means:

  • No contact. Copper gutters, hangers and straps must not touch Galvalume panels, flashings or trim.
  • Watch the water path. A copper gutter or downspout on an upper roof must not empty onto a lower Galvalume or stone-coated steel roof.
  • Follow the panel maker. With stone-coated steel, the maker’s specification rules out copper with its system, so we would steer you to seamless aluminum gutters instead.
  • Read the warranty. For any other metal roof, we read that maker’s warranty before we quote copper.

If you have, or are planning, a metal roof, such as standing seam, tell us the panel maker and coating. We will check the warranty language with you.

Cost

How much do copper half-round gutters cost?

HomeGuide’s 2026 guide estimates copper gutters at $25 to $40 or more per linear foot installed. That works out to about $5,000 to $8,000 for 200 feet. Angi lists seamless copper gutters at $15 to $25 per linear foot for the gutter, with labor priced separately.

HomeGuide adds that half-round styles run about $1 to $2 more per linear foot. These are national estimates with different scopes, and no published source gives a New Jersey figure. Your exact price comes from a free measurement.

What moves the price: total footage, the number of corners and downspouts, a second story, and whether old gutters come off first. Rotted fascia behind old gutters must be repaired before copper goes up; see our soffit and fascia page.

New gutters count as an exempt capital improvement for New Jersey sales tax when you give the contractor Form ST-8, while repairs are taxable (NJ Division of Taxation).

We give a written workmanship warranty, and material makers warranty their products. Our warranty page explains both.

Our workmanship warranty is a lifetime warranty: it covers our installation work for as long as you, the homeowner who signs the contract, own the home. It does not transfer to a later owner. Materials and paint finishes carry their manufacturers' own warranties, and the full written warranty comes with every estimate so you can read it before you sign.

Copper gutter questions

Are copper gutters worth the extra cost?

They can be on an older or historic house, or when you plan to stay a long time. InterNACHI lists copper gutters at 50-plus years against 20 to 40-plus for aluminum, and HomeGuide puts installed copper at $25 to $40 or more per linear foot nationally. They are estimates, not guarantees.

Do half-round gutters hold as much water as K-style?

No. A University of Illinois guide says half-round gutters have smaller capacity than K-style. A big roof plane may need a larger half-round gutter or an extra downspout.

How long do copper gutters last?

InterNACHI’s chart lists copper gutters at 50 years or more and copper downspouts at 100 years, assuming regular maintenance. HomeGuide says 50 to 100 years. None of these is a guarantee.

Can I put copper gutters on a metal roof?

Not on every one. Metal Sales’ Galvalume warranty excludes areas with copper runoff or copper contact, and DECRA’s stone-coated steel specification rules out copper with its system. We check your roof maker’s warranty before quoting copper.

Will my copper gutters turn green?

Bare copper darkens as it weathers and, over many years, can form a blue-green patina. How fast depends on weather and exposure. The patina is part of the look, not a coating that peels.

Do I need approval for copper gutters in a historic district?

Possibly. New Jersey towns can create historic districts and commissions, and most local ordinances review major exterior alterations in them. Ask your town before changing the gutter material or profile.
